Yakutia, Russia — Late Pleistocene, circa 18,000–20,000 years ago
Among the most commanding Ice Age displays imaginable, this monumental pair of woolly mammoth tusks possesses an extraordinary presence. Measuring 10′ 8″ and 10′ 4″ along the outer curves and weighing 160 and 156.5 pounds respectively, they form a remarkably harmonious matched pair whose sweeping arcs create an almost architectural composition.
Recovered near the village of Abyy in Yakutia, these tusks remained preserved within Siberian permafrost for nearly twenty millennia. Their graceful symmetry speaks to the immense scale of the animal from which they came, while the flowing curves capture the elegance that has made mammoth ivory one of nature’s most celebrated materials.
Rich mineralization has produced a remarkable palette of colours throughout the ivory. Deep slate blues and subtle green vivianite tones blend into warm amber, honey, caramel, and cream, revealing intricate natural banding along the entire length of each tusk. Under changing light, the polished surfaces display exceptional depth and a gentle lustre that accentuates the ivory’s grain and fossilized character.
Presented together on custom oak stands, the tusks create a dramatic focal point unlike almost any other natural history specimen. Whether displayed in a museum, corporate collection, luxury residence, or significant private collection, they possess a sculptural quality that transcends their scientific importance.
Matched mammoth tusk pairs of this scale and preservation are increasingly uncommon, particularly examples that retain such complementary proportions, curvature, and coloration.
All Fossil Realm mammoth tusks are professionally stabilized to ensure long-term structural integrity. For optimal preservation they should be displayed indoors under stable environmental conditions (approximately 50–60% relative humidity and 68–78 °F / 20–26 °C).
Fossil mammoth ivory is legally distinct from modern elephant ivory, identifiable by its Schreger line pattern, and may be traded internationally in accordance with current regulations.
