Carcharocles megalodon was the largest predatory fish to ever swim the oceans – with scientists estimating 10 feet for every inch of shark tooth length, maximum length estimates exceed 50 feet (18 meters). It targeted large prey, and Megalodon bite marks have even been found in whale bones. The onset of cooler seas and lowering of sea levels around 4 million years ago may have led to its decline and ultimate extinction.
