Roughly five thousand years ago, a swarm of massive iron bodies from space rained down over what is now Argentina’s Chaco Province, forming the celebrated Campo del Cielo (“Field of Heaven”) strewn field. The resulting craters and colossal metallic masses—some weighing several tonnes—were rediscovered by Spanish explorers in 1576, sparking centuries of fascination.
Composed primarily of iron with traces of nickel and cobalt, these meteorites represent some of the most dramatic examples of extraterrestrial iron known to science.
This particular specimen is highly sculptural and of museum calibre, displaying an extraordinary deep-grey patina and sharply defined regmaglypts—the thumbprint-like impressions formed as molten metal streamed away during its fiery passage through Earth’s atmosphere. Its form and surface texture capture both the violence of its cosmic journey and the enduring elegance of its preservation.
