Otodus megalodon was the largest marine predator in Earth’s history — a shark whose body proportions, extrapolated from tooth size, place the largest individuals at roughly fifty feet in length. It preyed on whales. Nothing in the ocean challenged it. It ruled its environment for roughly twenty million years before disappearing approximately 3.6 million years ago, as cooling oceans and shifting prey populations ended its reign.
