This is a breathtaking mural with four beautiful fossil fish - The largest fish is a  Phareodus of exceptional quality (20" long) and the others are a large Diplomystus (17" long), smaller Diplomystus (6.75") and Knightia (4.5" long).

These fish swam in ancient Eocene lakes in Wyoming, USA, 50 million years ago. They were discovered in the famous Green River Formation, which is known to produce some of the most spectacular vertebrate fossils. Interestingly, predatory Phareodus and Diplomystus have even been found with small fish preserved in their mouths!

Phareodus is one of the rarer types of fish found in the Green River Formation and this prime example has phenomenal details, including wonderfully preserved teeth.

Diplomystus is an extinct relative of modern day herrings. Its upturned mouth was used to feed on surface fish

Knightia are the most common fish in the Formation.

It took many hours of painstaking work by a professional team of fossil preparators to reveal the fine bones of these fossil fish from the stone. Surely, it was worth the effort to bring these ancient fish to life!
