Willard — Triceratops prorsus
One of the largest Triceratops skeletons ever discovered.
Willard is an exceptional Triceratops prorsus skeleton from the Hell Creek Formation of North Dakota. Measuring approximately 28 feet in length and nearly 12 feet in height, the specimen may represent the largest known example of the species discovered to date.
The skeleton was unearthed in Bowman County, North Dakota, following a multi-year excavation led by experienced commercial paleontologists. Its discovery, preparation, and eventual public exhibition demonstrate the collaborative nature of major natural history projects, involving fossil hunters, preparators, researchers, dealers, brokers, engineers, and museums across several countries.
Following its discovery, Fossil Realm was engaged to help identify an appropriate institutional placement for the specimen. Through an international network of contacts within the natural history community, Willard was ultimately acquired for exhibition as part of The Big Eight – Dinosaur Revelation at the Hong Kong Science Museum, where the skeleton was viewed by hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Prepared under the direction of German paleontologist Nils Knötschke and his team, the skeleton was stabilized, restored, mounted, and documented to museum standards. Its remarkable size and excellent field documentation made it an outstanding candidate for exhibition.
Beyond its scale, Willard embodies a broader principle that guides much of our work: the most important fossils are often those that unite scientific, historical, educational, and cultural significance. Such specimens do more than survive. They continue to inform, inspire, and connect new audiences with deep time.
