Stylemys nebracensis

      This tortoise slowly plodded over the temperate area of South Dakota about 30 million years ago in an area known as the White River Badlands of South Dakota. Today the badlands are a series of highly eroded hills and gullies of light colored sedimentary layers.

Stylemys

      was the first species of fossil tortoise to be discovered and described in North America. 

 

  • Dimensions: 20 inches, 51 cm (length) x 16 inches, 41cm (width) x 7 inches, 17.8 cm (height), weight = 92.4 lb. or 42 kilograms. Minimal restoration –  It also has fossilized leg bones.
