Incredible Mammoth Jaw from Hungary - 1.9 feet

Here is an incredible adult woolly mammoth lower jaw (mandible) preserved with complete molar teeth. It was discovered in Hungary, 30 km south of Budapest. The unique location in Central Europe adds value to this striking vertebrate fossil! 

 

This rare specimen is exquisitely preserved and has great scientific and educational value. The details of the molar's grinding surface enamel is fully intact, and the foramina can be seen, wherein the nerves and vessels were carried. 

Species: Mammuthus primigenius 

Age: Late Pleistocene - 126,000 to 11,700 years old.

This fabulous piece has virtually no restoration!

Jaw measures 20 inches / 50 cm at back width (condyles), 19.5 inches / 49 cm high. Molar teeth measure 9 inches long / 23 cm x 3.5 inches / 9 cm wide. Weighs 63.8 lbs / 29 kg.

Interestingly, the wooly mammoth had 6 sets of teeth throughout its lifetime, which were progressively larger. They are designated as P2, P3, and P4, and M1, M2, M3.
